textual embrace performance @ the zoo

Hi Linda,

Here are some images from my gig last thursday night at The Zoo. It was a live art gig for me to perform the Textual Embrace work as part of a night of bands and burlesque. Pretty fun and felt like a avant guarde 'happening'.

Shoot went well!

Hi Freya,

The shooting went well.
I ended up doing prep for the shoot on Friday, and then shooting on Saturday.

First I had to work out how to make a system for the piano keys to correspond with alphabet and punctuation marks. I did that on the Friday.

Then on the Saturday, I started shooting. First, I tried shooting typing your text on the piano in a continuous way. It took me about 40 minutes to do three paragraphs, because the key system was so new to me.

I then tried various angles of shooting individual alphabet letter "notes/keys". That was fun. The plan is to piece together the text letter by letter on the computer.

So as you can see I have a heap of editing to do!

I am looking forward to the editing actually!

Sorry for taking so long to write to you.
I do a lot of teaching work on the weekends.

Do you know what is happening with monitors for the show?
How about the positioning of the monitors?

I am uploading two photos from a workshop I ran over here on July 30th.
It was a one day creative workshop making artworks based on the theme of "memory", with the language of communication being English. The participants were great!

Dear Linda,

OK here comes some text...

Her body trembles with anticipation; I feel her flesh flex and shiver.
The warmth of my breath brings goose bumps to its surface.
As my tongue envelopes her flesh, my writing embraces her skin.
She tastes salty, but moist.

I write the story of her flesh onto its surface. It seeps.
As she peels out of the suit, her flesh lays bare the story.
Intimately we perform the ritual of the textual embrace.
Her flesh wears the trace proudly.

Her flesh is soft but not like tissues...more like peaches.
Her scent makes my mouth water and desire to write her more.
Each time my tongue touches her flesh, she strains a little.
As I spread her legs, I feel her anticipation.

Perfectly alluring...soft, subtle, strong and sweet.
My text develops over her form, each curve and crease emphasised.
Her scent embraces my tongue. Each tastebud engorged with ink.
I smell her sweat. It's salty, but tasteful.

Her flesh is stained, embraced by the trace.
The moments begin to blur, the text overlaps on the surface.
Writing bleeds beyond the flesh, beyond the surface, onto the suit.
Echoing thoughts articulate the lingering intimacy.

As for the images, just thought I'd add a couple. The portrait one is what I have submitted for the catalogue. What do you think?

I loved the images!
Thanks for uploading them.

I have been in contact with some people from my favorite gallery here in Tokyo, Youkobo Art Space.
They have a piano in the gallery, and have said that I can use it.
I am planning to try to shoot something this Friday.

Would you be able to give me some text before then?

What do you think?
If not, maybe i could try using the text in the artist pair section?

Hi Linda,

I think your idea of typing on a piano sounds really interesting. I have just done my performance for Brisbane festival last Friday and for the first time I actually wrote the same text in English and Tongue Writing. I had trouble being able to capture the english text in the camera, but if I can I will transcribe it and post it later. It was all semi-erotic stream of consiouness text in response to the theme: love letters. The work is titled: Textual Embrace.

I will also post images later.

This is the work I was thinking of editing to use, so this text would be approporiate for you to use. The particular point of connection is touch and the proximity of personal to public space. I also saw a link in terms of intuitive play.

Idea for my response to your work

Dear Freya,

I have been thinking about your artwork, and am interested in the details of the text you write with your tongue.

I am hoping to make a video in response to your artwork, incorporating some sort of touch, and using the words you wrote with your tongue..

One idea I had was of "typing" the words you wrote in your tongue pieces on a "piano keyboard", and videoing the process.
I am not expecting the result to be music, just a record of the process.
I am planning to think of some system of deciding how to correspond the piano keyboard keys to the typewriter keys.

My mother's family were German immigrants, and had a piano importing business, called the "Heindorff Bros".
I have been wanting to use a piano because of this link. Also the act of touching is important in the playing of the piano.

Would you be able to send me some text of what you have written with your tongue?
Do you remember what you write?

Or could you write something new?

Hi Linda,

I am having slightly more luck with my camera, so here goes.....

The image with the hand is me with your artwork, or more specifically me holding your artwork. I took quite a few piccies and I will give you a disc when you are next in Oz. You can also take images of your own then if you like.

I will write again into the diary relay on Monday.

Dear Freya,

I looked at some of the video artworks you gave me on CD.
I really loved the video of the close-up of your tongue painting.
The video with the tongue painting on see through plexi-glass close to the video camera.
I would really like to respond to that artwork, for our exhibition in August.
What do you think?
Would that be OK?

Also I have just uploaded some images that were taken in China in March when a group of us from Tokyo Geidai went there on an exchange visit. They are of the seal maker who made the stone seal of the image of my finger print. The seal I used to decorate the box I made to give you. Keiju Cho is in one photo watching the process.

By the way, I don't have a photo of that box. Would you be able to take a snap of it for me?
